I‘ve always been fascinated by the “music of the spheres” – the image that each planet in the solar system produces a special sound as it orbits around the sun, and all the planets together produce an elegant harmony. There was a time when that harmony was thought to reflect the basic intervals and harmonic structures of our musical traditions.
This piece focuses on the earth’s contribution to that solar harmony, but updated to the present complexity of life, including humanity. The chord that begins the piece pulsates with the events on the planet, as though, from orbit, one can hear the vibrating turbulence, spinning, twirling of the planet itself - but also all of us in constant motion – migration, conflict, celebration - from joyous dancing to dark turmoil.
Google Earth lets us see countries and neighborhoods; but that’s only visual - as a musician, I need the sound – there should be a program where we can hear from orbit all the soundscapes across the earth. This piece imagines that in 5 minutes.
